Retail Velocity 101: How to Read Units Per Store Per Week

September 16, 2026

Once your product is on the shelf, one number tends to decide its future: velocity. It tells a buyer how quickly your product sells compared with everything around it, and it is often the deciding factor when it is time to reorder, expand or drop an item.

What velocity measures

The most common measure is units sold per store per week. Dividing total units by the number of stores carrying the product, and by the number of weeks, gives a figure you can compare against other items in the same category.

Why buyers watch it

Shelf space is limited. Buyers want items that earn their place, so a product that moves steadily is easier to keep than one that sits. Strong velocity also gives you credibility when you ask for more doors.

Ways to improve it

  • Educate store staff so they can recommend the product with confidence
  • Support the launch with consumer marketing that points shoppers to the store
  • Use demos and sampling to convert first-time buyers
  • Choose a shelf position that matches how your customer shops

Measure and adjust

Track sales by store and by week, and look for patterns. If a few stores outperform the rest, learn what they do differently and repeat it. If a store is slow, a small change in placement or staff training can make a noticeable difference.
